A new messaging and payment super app called ZyMix, marketed towards British students, is utilizing servers owned by a Chinese company that has been placed on a US military blacklist due to alleged ties to the People’s Liberation Army. The app, which combines chat, payments, and community features, is being promoted as the UK’s first super app designed for Gen Z.

Background on ZyMix

ZyMix has a contract with a German-based subsidiary of Tencent Holdings, a Chinese conglomerate based in Shenzhen. In January 2026, Tencent was added to the US Department of Defense’s (DoD) list of Chinese military companies, known as the section 1260H list. The DoD cites that Tencent is indirectly affiliated with the Chinese military, which is part of a broader US strategy to counteract what it sees as Beijing’s efforts to enhance its military capabilities through technology.

Implications of the Blacklist

The inclusion of Tencent on this blacklist prohibits the DoD from entering into or renewing contracts with any entity on the list, although broader sanctions are not automatically applied. A spokesperson for Tencent stated:

“

"Tencent’s inclusion on this list is clearly a mistake. We are not a military company or supplier. Unlike sanctions or export controls, this listing has no impact on our business. We will nonetheless work with the Department of Defense to address any misunderstanding."
